Gloucestershire produce clean sweep at golf championships

A strong Hartpury contingent representing Gloucestershire swept aside the competition at the recent South West Schools Golf Championships.

Held at the Elfordleigh Golf and Country Club, Plymouth, the competition saw 30 male and 15 female golfers battle it out for 10 and five spaces respectively for the national finals.

An all-Hartpury team of Kieran Sutton, Matt Aston, Jacob Tinsley, Tom Sloman, Will Burgess and Matt Green fired Gloucestershire to a 16-shot victory in the boys’ team competition over second placed Hampshire.

The girls weren’t to be outdone as Hartpury’s Gee-won Park, Cleeve School’s Victoria Wakeley-Jones and Rednock School’s Charlotte Heeps clawed back an 11-shot deficit after the first round to produce a two-shot victory over Somerset.

There was further silverware for Park as her excellent form also meant she picked up the individual girls’ title, beating England player Sophie Keech on countback with a better final 18-hole score, which means she now qualifies for the national finals.

Hartpury’s Kieran Sutton also continued his fine form this year with a one-shot victory over fellow student Jacob Tinsley. After Sutton had posted the lowest score in the clubhouse with a 36-hole total of three over par following a best of the day 68 in the morning and a 73 in the afternoon, Tinsley could have still grabbed victory on the last but his four foot birdie putt slid past the cup.

There was more good news for Sutton and Tinsley as they and fellow Hartpury players, Matt Aston and Tom Sloman, qualified for the national finals to be held in June and the possibility of an international cap later in the year.

Hartpury’s golf manager, Rich King, said: “This was an excellent performance by everyone involved and all the players showed their quality, resulting in a clean sweep for Gloucestershire. It’s great that Hartpury’s students have been able to make such a contribution to an excellent result.

“It’s unusual to see one county win every category at the championships due to the quality and standard in the South West but it just goes to show the calibre of players we have here in Gloucestershire.”
