Kingsholm kids kick on Olympic legacy with help of Hartpury

A group of local Year Six children expanded their Olympic and Paralympic knowledge by getting hands-on with a ‘mini-Olympics’ style event at Hartpury College.

Fifty 10 and 11-year-olds from Kingsholm School in Gloucester spent a day with Hartpury’s BTEC Sports Coaching students taking part in sports like blind handball, hockey, football and sit down volleyball.

The day formed part of the students’ organising events module which they complete as part of their course and gave the Kingsholm pupils the chance to learn more about a variety of sports.

“It’s about getting them to enjoy themselves and hoping they come away having learned something useful,” said Hartpury student Sam Dickson, 18, from Gloucester.

“From our point of view, it helps with our leadership skills and event planning, both as something to go towards modules on our course, but also as experience to put down on our CVs, which is great.”

The event, which was sponsored by ASDA and run in partnership with Sports Leaders UK, who were there to oversee the day, was entirely put together by students from the BTEC Sports Coaching programme at Hartpury.

Nicola Stevenson, a lecturer on the course, said: “We’ve been planning this event since January. A lot of our students want to go and work in this sort of area and pursue careers working with children so this was an ideal opportunity for them.

“The main aim of the event was to get children involved in sport and offer them the chance to take part in a sport which they might not have tried before.”
