Students brave the wind and rain to help at Badminton Horse Trials

A group of 19 Hartpury Equine students headed to Badminton Horse Trials to act as crossing stewards for a day.

The 17 higher education and two further education students were joined by two students from Weston College at the event on Saturday, May 10th.

They manned specific crossing points on the horse track between the stables and the cross-country start. Their role was to stop the public from crossing the track as horses and golf carts (buggies) full of the rider’s team of people and equipment came through.

Hartpury Equine lecturer, Darcy Murphy, said: “The students did a fabulous job despite the wind and rain! We take a group every year and it’s a great experience for them.

“They were polite to the public and handled themselves professionally in a high pressure situation. Some students had to catch sheets of blowing plastic or boxes to keep the rubbish from being entangled in horses’ legs or frightening the horses.

“They were all given a break during the day to do a bit of shopping and watch the event too.”
The hours the students worked at Badminton could now count towards the completion of the Young Equestrian Leaders Award.
