Pupils from Hartpury Primary School raced to the finish in an ‘awesome’ activity triathlon organised by Hartpury’s Outdoor Adventure students.
First year students on the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Outdoor Adventure supported the children to experience shelter building, orienteering and raft building at Mallards Pike in the Forest of Dean alongside staff members from Viney Hill Christian Outdoor Centre, who provided raft building equipment.
The students produced their own orienteering maps, plan of the day and other resources for the children to use, as well as arranging transport and refreshments for the school and carrying out a risk assessment for the day.
One of the pupils said: “It was fun, I got to try lots of new activities and run and find things; it was like a treasure hunt. It was good fun because I got to do it with my friends.”
One little girl declared the whole day “awesome” while another pupil said: “I enjoyed the raft building. It was very risky (tempting!) to fall in and that’s really fun!”
Incorporated into the activities were elements of maths and science as well as team building skills.
Hartpury Primary School headteacher, Tony Larner, said: “The Hartpury students did well to include all our students in the activities. One of our students is scared of the water but he was supported and given the opportunity to go in a canoe so he didn’t miss out on the raft building.”
Outdoor Adventure lecturer, Hannah Christie said: “The event gave the children the chance to engage in activities outside their learning environment and to learn to co-operate with each other, while for our students, they developed their collaboration and problem-solving skills more effectively than they could in the classroom.
“They really start to appreciate the flexibility needed when working with the younger age group and they gain a greater understanding of the added health and safety considerations!
“It’s really beneficial for them to get the chance to work with young people at events like this before they head into their work placements in the second year.”
