Hartpury’s Harry steps up a level in Spain with strong showing for Great Britain

Hartpury’s Harry steps up a level in Spain with strong showing for Great Britain

Hartpury’s Harry Sykes has been starring on the international stage with a strong showing for Great Britain in Spain.

The young Modern Pentathlon talent competed in the 21st International Competition for Modern Triathlon in Vila de Sant Boi, Spain. Harry represented Great Britain in both the individual and team events against competitors from around Europe. At the age of 17, he was among the youngest competitors.

Harry was selected for the GB squad after strong finishes at ranking competitions and competed as part of the Youth Under-19s team, having been last year’s Under-17s National Champion for Modern Pentathlon.

After a respectable 11th place in the fencing, Harry stepped up his performance level and had the third fastest swim, bringing his overall placing up to ninth. Although in the combined event, he initially dropped one place to a Portuguese competitor, he was able to come back strongly and pass one of the Spanish competitors, maintaining his overall ninth place position.

Also competing was Oliver Murray, who will be joining the college’s Modern Pentathlon programme in September. Both Oliver and Harry were part of the British team that finishedin second place overall.

Mat Dewey, Hartpury’s programme manager for Modern Pentathlon, said: “Harry’s selection for such a high profile international competition shows how much he has progressed as an athlete recently.

“While he’s faced tough competition before, particularly at the Great British Youth International last month in Birmingham, this triathlon in Spain pitted him against the most experienced competitors he has faced. His performance demonstrated that he is constantly improving and able to handle the pressure of the international stage as the level of competition moves up another gear.”

Mat was also in action himself last weekend, competing in the Open Men’s division at the National Modern Triathlon Championships alongside one of Hartpury’s development squad, Will Revell.

Mat’s swim put him in third position before a strong combined event (running and shooting) fired him into top spot, finishing almost one minute ahead of his nearest rival. Will finished in fourth spot, putting in an impressive performance in all disciplines.
