Winter Clipping

A Hartpury lecturer has had an article published in a prestigious national agricultural journal about the benefits of winter clipping dairy cattle.

Lecturer in FE Agriculture, Felicity Coates, has written the article for the December 2014 edition of the Holstein UK Journal, which is released every other month on behalf of the Holstein Cattle Society. It is also circulated in Europe and North America.

The article focuses on how winter clipping dairy cattle when they are housed improves cow production, health and welfare, seen in the context of further studies relating to the relationship between production and yields with comfort and welfare. It looks at the positive impact of winter clipping on increasing cleanliness and reducing heat stress in cattle. This was the focus of Felicity’s dissertation when she was at university.
