Gloucester-Hartpury go marching on as higher league Loughborough prove no match

Gloucester-Hartpury’s women’s team showed their skill as they overcame a strong Loughborough side in the league above them in round two of the cup.

Susie Appleby’s side advanced to the third round of the Women’s Intermediate Cup away from home with a runaway 26-13 score, despite a late score from Championship North side Loughborough.

Gloucester-Hartpury opened the scoring in an even first half as Beth Hicks’ strong run from halfway saw her score under the posts, converted by Limbrick to put the away side 0-7 up. Following two missed attempts by Loughborough, the home side fought back with an unconverted score of their own.

A Loughborough penalty put them 8-7 up before another converted Gloucester-Hartpury try from 18-year-old Kayleigh Bartlett gave them a 14-8 halftime lead.

Mary-Ann Gittings put daylight between the two sides in the second half after some good work to beat her opposite fullback after a deft kick from Limbrick, who went on to miss the conversion. Despite missing the extra points, Limbrick ensured the win for Gloucester-Hartpury with a try of her own to put the away side 26-8 in front.

Loughborough’s perseverance saw them awarded a late consolation try but it wasn’t enough to prevent Gloucester-Hartpury marching onto the next round as 26-13 winners.

Head Coach Susie Appleby said: “This was a really good result against a strong team in the league above us. There were a number of outstanding performances but what please me most was the way we controlled the game and the continuity we showed in our attack.

“We are in a really good place at the moment, sitting top of the league and excited about what the next round of the cup will bring.”
