Hartpury student wins farming award

Hartpury student wins farming award

Rachel, currently in the final year of her BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma, initially was voted number one in the ‘Best Trainee’ category, after a series of interviews in Taunton against a number of other contenders. All of the category winners then went forward to the Dairy Show held at the prestigious Bath & West Showground, where Rachel was delighted to be named as the overall champion.

And being the award winner had an immediate impact.

Rachel told us “On the way back to the car I bumped into some people who asked me where I got my award. They offered me two weeks work experience at Arla foods in Leeds next Easter holidays.

So I’ll be going to Leeds for two weeks and that’ll be working with Asda and the food suppliers with Arla. I‘m also doing some work for Crediton Milling, a feed company in Devon, to help them with their shows.”

Why was Rachel chosen? “They said that they thought I would be good at promoting the industry to younger people and just that I was a good overall candidate.”

Rachel comes from dairy farming background, with the family farm being at Godney in Somerset. However, in order to broaden her experience, she has just finished a work placement in another part of the sector.

I was on a beef, sheep and arable farm which was a bit different to home and it was good to look into how they farmed. With the arable there was more to do with the machinery side of things, so that was good.”

Given the choice of colleges in the South West, what made Rachel initially choose Hartpury?

“I did look round quite a few other colleges, but I thought the layout here was really good and the first approach to here was just outstanding. You a lot of good reports from here and I’ve enjoyed it all.”

What next?

“I’d like to go to New Zealand and see what the farming industry is like over there. Then see how things go with Arla – maybe to go round different farms and discuss the improvement of the dairy - I’d like to be more hands on and get involved and help people.”

Congratulations Rachel, and good luck!
