Students put through their paces with a gruelling Commando challenge

Hartpury’s Uniformed Public Services students got a taste of commando fitness when they were put through their paces by the Royal Marines.

Royal Marines Commandos, who are trained specialists in unarmed combat amongst other skills, ran a tough fitness session for the students before putting them through a gruelling circuit on one of Hartpury’s rugby pitches.

With these young students being prepared at Hartpury for their dream careers in a variety of services, from the Police and Fire Service to the Armed Forces, fitness is an integral part of their course.

Brendan Ward, Uniformed Public Services tutor, said: “While our own staff help students to work towards their own personal fitness targets, this session was an opportunity to  see the standards that are expected at the highest level in the Armed Forces.

“To be a Royal Marine Commando, recruits need to have the right state of mind as well as the right physical attributes. At Hartpury, we encourage students to work hard in and out of the classroom and work through the challenges they face.”

First year Uniformed Public Services student, Lyle Weir, had already previously spent a week with the Royal Marines at the Commando Training Centre in Lympstone.

Lyle said: “I want to be a Royal Marine, so sessions like this are perfect for me. Opportunities like this were a big reason for me wanting to do this course at Hartpury, and I’m looking forward to continuing my development throughout the rest of the year.”

Kelly Constable, a second year Uniformed Public Services student, added: “I am a keen sprinter, so I love the fitness element of the course. It is hard work, but good fun, and will really help me in both my sprinting ambitions and my plans for a future career in the services.”
