Mel nicks in to claim silver at World Championships

Hartpury’s Sports Ambassador Mel Nicholls picked up her first World Championship silver medal as Great Britain claimed a clean sweep in the T34 800 metres final in Doha.

The 1500m world record holder finished behind team-mate and rival, Hannah Cockroft, and just ahead of fellow Brit Kare Adenegan.

Ahead of the Championships, Mel had said: “I've just focused on maintaining my levels of performance and working on my strengths and weaknesses this year so that I can get the times and placings I need to qualify for the major competitions.”

Mel’s next major goal is to finish in the medal positions at next year’s Olympics in Rio and she will have her eyes set on bettering her recently achieved silver.

"My ultimate aim is to medal in the 800m in Rio. It's going to be tough; there are a lot of good young girls coming through, but I think my experience of major competitions will count for a lot,” she said.

"My new training handbike, 'Acorn', that Hartpury has provided for me was a massive bonus and it's really helped me boost my overall fitness and endurance.

“It also really helps me to balance my power to weight ratio and, because you're travelling at a higher speed, it's great for testing and improving your reactions and handling too."
