Hartpury take colleges’ tournament title with triumphant treble

Hartpury take colleges’ tournament title with triumphant treble
Hartpury’s rugby girls clinched their first tournament title of the season as they took the Colleges 10s crown at Pulborough RFC in West Sussex.
A hat-trick of emphatic wins against other colleges took them to the title, seeing off Worthing 53-0, Loughborough 31-5 and Filton 26-0, with first year A Level student, Abi Burton, winning the player of the day honours. Bishop Burton and Brockenhurst were the other colleges that took part in the competition.
Ellie Kildunne weighed in with a hat-trick of tries and conversions against Worthing, while Ella Wywras dotted down a brace and slotted a conversion. Connie Powell and Alice Burton also crossed the whitewash.
Against Loughborough, there were two tries and three conversions from Kildunne, a try and two conversions for Wywras, plus a try apiece for Powell and Tabitha Copson. Kildunne then raced in for four tries in the final game, converting three, while Burton scored the other try.
Laura-Jane Lewis, who heads up the Under-18s women’s rugby academy at Hartpury, said: “It can be tough to find the high standard of competition that our girls need to test themselves and progress.
“The tournament was set up by all AASE colleges and we are hoping to run three more dates throughout the year. We have started with a 10s format with the hope of developing into a 15s competition eventually.
“It was great for the girls’ confidence to get a tournament win under their belts so early in the season. This is a really talented group and we have high expectations of them following in the footsteps of so many Hartpury women’s rugby success stories that have come before them.”
