Hartpury helps young managers to race ahead

Staff from the world-famous racing venue have worked hard to achieve The Institute of Management Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship Certificate in Management, with teaching and guidance provided by the College.

The racecourse employs around 60 full-time staff; however these numbers can swell to more than 5000 workers during the prestigious Cheltenham Festival.

Jaime Wallace is based at Cheltenham and manages the Finance team for all 14 courses within the Jockey Club group. “Basically, I had to learn to become a better manager. I’d come up through the ranks, so was I was in a situation where I’d worked with people as friends who I now had to manage. I needed help!”

Chris Hewer, from the Hospitality Sales team, did not have a management role at the time of his training, but is clearly looking to the future. “I want to progress in my career. I really enjoy working here and want to be able take that next step up. Undoubtedly things will change over time and I want to put myself in the best possible position.”

So what were some of the key lessons? Jaime told us “Definitely communication; that’s so important. I always used to concentrate on the task, but you need to concentrate on the team and the individual as well. As long as people are interacting well with each other then, generally, it keeps everything working well. That’s a massive thing that I learnt. Also delegation, that keeps people happy because it keeps them motivated.”

It was hard work but it certainly was beneficial. I’ll often refer to my notes at work if I can see that someone needs help. I’m definitely glad I did it.”

Stephen Whitbourn, Learning and Development Specialist from the Hartpury Business team, was responsible for the delivery of the programme over a fourteen month period.

Stephen said “This is one of the more extensive short courses that Hartpury Business offers to the business community. The programme is a mixture of training tutorials held at Hartpury College covering the management theory, followed by regular onsite visits to help delegates to implement the learning directly in the work place.

Working with Jaime and Chris has been fascinating and they both have worked extremely hard to achieve this qualification. I was really pleased with their feedback that the training was of direct use to them in their jobs at the racecourse”.

Hartpury Business offer a wide range of ILM accredited Management , Leadership and Coaching courses ranging from level 3 to Level 6 and from 4 to 7 days duration.
