New course for aspiring PE teachers

New course for aspiring PE teachers

For those seeking a career as a physical education teacher, Hartpury’s new degree course will provide an ideal learning experience as well as the skills and knowledge to take the next step in applying for a PGCE in either Primary or Secondary phase education. The programme offers a range of modules aimed at giving students a comprehensive understand of the school physical education curriculum.

A key aspect of the programme will be to provide a gradient of developmental ‘in-school’ experiences away from the lecture theatre and across all levels of the award.

Christopher Potter, Hartpury’s head of department for university sports courses, said “In designing the programme, we have drawn heavily on the expertise and guidance of practitioners in the region, such as current PE department heads and teaching staff. These experts have directly influenced programme structure and content so that is both current and relevant for students interested in physical education and school sport.”

Successful applicants can expect to cover a range of first year modules aimed at establishing fundamental knowledge and skills; enhancement of vocational skills alongside a range of optional modules in their second year and a third year including a dissertation.

For more detailed information, including entry requirements and how to apply, prospective students should visit the course page on the website.

The programme will be delivered through classroom based lectures, seminars, field or study visits, laboratory-based sessions, practical sessions in the gymnasium, field or rehabilitation suite and work-based learning. A wide variety of assessment methods will be adopted including practical exams, presentations, poster defences, written exams, assignments, portfolio work and oral exams.
