Hartpury help pupils get into World Cup spirit

Hartpury help pupils get into World Cup spirit

Ahead of England’s Rugby World Cup opener with Fiji, a group of Hartpury students helped kick off six weeks of action across the county as they ran an event looking to inspire future generations to take up rugby.

Held at Calton School in Gloucester, the two day event saw 75 Hartpury students ensuring that every pupil at the primary school was involved as they learned more about the Rugby World Cup, both in and outside of the classroom.

The pupils, from Year Three upwards, got involved in a series of coaching drills planned by the Hartpury students as well as making flags for each country. They even got the chance to practice their very own ‘Hakas’, which were performed on the day.

Andrea Preedy, one of the teachers from Calton Primary, said: “The Hartpury students were brilliant with the kids – I think we can safely say the children all had a fantastic time, shown by their beaming faces and enthusiasm for the ball. The event was superbly organised and the whole two days ran like clockwork.”

Each class at Calton was assigned a team from the tournament to support throughout the event while all the activities gave the pupils a chance to learn more about the history of the tournament as well as get more hands-on with skills-based drills.

Hartpury student, Ethan Harris, added: “One of the hardest challenges in planning this event was designing drills and activities for Reception children, immediately followed by coaching the Year Six pupils. The difference in abilities and skill acquisition for the different ages was a real eye opener.

“My favourite group were the Reception children though; they were just bubbly all day and never seemed to stop smiling!”

Jo Ronald, Head of the Hartpury College Sports Department, said: “The Hartpury students were a credit to themselves and the college. They worked tirelessly planning and delivering this event and the smiles on the children’s faces throughout the day was an absolute joy to see”
