Hartpury’s Tim joins TV survival guru for outdoor adventure and education missions

Hartpury’s Tim joins TV survival guru for outdoor adventure and education missions

Hartpury’s Tim Treloar has been opening young people’s eyes to the wonders of the great outdoors alongside one of the biggest names in the business – Bear Grylls.

Tim (on the right in the picture), who teaches the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Outdoor Adventure at Hartpury, has been working with the Bear Grylls Survival Academy in his free time for the last two years, teaching extreme survival techniques to people of all ages as part of a hand-picked team of highly trained experts in the UK and abroad. He has also been involved with supporting a number of Bear's new TV shows.

“The fantastic thing about my involvement with the Academy is that I’m continually gaining new skills and knowledge from the foremost experts and teachers in the field that I can then share with my own students,” said Tim, 31.

“I actually studied PE at university but outdoor adventure was always my passion and when I started working at Hartpury seven years ago, they gave me their full support with my professional development.

“As well as learning a huge amount from the other Outdoor Adventure staff, I was able to train as a mountain leader and a caving instructor – opportunities that have got me where I am now. I’m also a kayaking, canoeing and climbing instructor.

Getting kids physically active and enjoying spending more time outdoors – that’s my motivation, along with educating people about ‘perceived risk’ – which was the focus of my research for my Masters. It’s about making people realise that it’s actually more dangerous getting in a car than going into a cave. There’s a whole other world out there and people like myself and Bear are all about opening the doors to it.”

As well as being a qualified lecturer in Outdoor Adventure, Tim has led an Army Preparation course and has organised a number of gruelling charity expeditions in aid of ‘Help for Heroes’ and ‘The Army Benevolent Fund’.
