Funding boost to help give Tom an even brighter farming future

Funding boost to help give Tom an even brighter farming future

Agriculture degree student Tom Saunders, has become the second Hartpury recipient of the new Joe Henson bursary, aimed at helping aspiring agriculturalists to take their studies further.

Tom, applied for this award as he has started the Foundation degree in Agriculture at Hartpury University Centre this September, having completed the Level 3 Extended Diploma Agriculture at Hartpury College. The £3000 bursary will help him during the course of his studies.

Director of Agriculture at Hartpury, Janatha Stout, said: “Tom is highly capable and was offered a job as a herdsman on the same farm where he had done his year’s work placement as part of his College course. He is now living on this farm in Wiltshire, milking part-time and fitting this in around his degree. We’re very flexible with students to enable them to balance their farming commitments with their studies. Tom is interested in travelling and working abroad, so he’s likely to take the opportunity to complete a worj placement aboard as part of his degree. He has a bright future ahead of him.”

The Joe Henson Bursary supports up to three years of study, with up to £1,000 provided each year to two students across the three counties – Gloucestershire, Worcestershire and Herefordshire. Another Hartpury student, Charlotte Heaven, has also benefited from this bursary. Heaven is set to begin her Extended Agriculture Diploma at Hartpury on her return from competing for England at the Tug-of-War World Championships!
