John is a former Clifton Rugby player who also enjoyed spells playing professionally in Italy and with Henley Hawks. Prior to joining Hartpury in 2011 he was Academy Coach with Bristol Rugby. He also worked in a number of other roles including 1st XV Skills Coach and Kicking Coach.
After a brief spell playing professionally in Italy and at Henley Hawks, John moved back to his hometown of Bristol and joined Clifton, where he was to remain for 10 years and establish himself as one of the most deadly kickers in the National Leagues.
In his final three years at Clifton, John also served as the club’s head coach. His first season in charge saw him guide his charges back into National Division Two South after relegation and to an EDF Intermediate Cup Final at Twickenham in 2009, which they lost to Hartpury College RFC.
Alongside his commitments to Bristol Rugby and Clifton, John was Head Coach at Bristol University and Kicking Consultant to the Georgian, Portuguese and Romanian national sides ahead of World Cups and Nations Cups.
After arriving at Hartpury to coach the Senior Academy, John enjoyed an excellent first season. He led Hartpury to their first BUCS Championship title since 2009 and directed Hartpury College RFC to fourth place in National Division Two South.
