As the UK’s most successful sporting college, Hartpury has an enviable reputation for developing some of the UK’s brightest women’s rugby talent at our specialist sports campus.
Hartpury’s success in women’s rugby development has been unparalleled since the introduction of the sport to the college in 2008 and we've taken the lead in supporting young, talented women’s rugby players through the best elite talent development programme in the UK.
We run women's rugby programmes at both College and University level, so, if you can think of nothing better than playing competitive rugby and developing your skills as you study, there really is no place like Hartpury. We’ve still got limited places for September 2016 and a limited number of bursaries are available.
More than 20 England Under-20s and 10 senior England squad members have come through the women’s rugby programme at Hartpury, including Women’s Rugby World Cup winners Alex Matthews and Ceri Large. And many of our current degree students are already plying their trade in the Women’s Premiership, including Worcester’s Kelly Smith (studying a Physical Education and School Sport degree) and Lichfield’s Molly Morrissey (studying a Sports Business Management degree), who both play for England Under-20s, along with three of our current College students on the Under-18s programme. Hannah Jones, a full Welsh international and Scotland Under-20s player, Kristin Jones, are also students here.
Our Under-18s women’s squad has had unrivalled team and individual success, winning all of the national college titles as well as producing more than Under-20s and 10 senior England Internationals to date.
And now we’ve joined forces with Gloucester Rugby to create a new Gloucester-Hartpury women’s rugby team, who play some of their home games at Kingsholm. Led by England women’s rugby legend, Susie Appleby, the team’s ultimate aim is to compete in the Women’s Premiership. A number of our degree students are part of this set-up alongside playing for our university level team in the BUCS leagues.
Studying on our specialist sports campus offers unrivalled opportunities to achieve your potential on and off the field. We will work with you to ensure you can be the best you can be on the rugby pitch and achieve academically, with supervised study and bespoke timetables on offer to elite level players. There is also a real emphasis on individual development and progression through the RFU performance pathway and we've forged strong links with both Worcester and Bristol.
As well as top level coaching, our elite players have access to performance services including physiotherapy and strength and conditioning. You don’t have to be playing at the highest level to be part of our university women's rugby programme though and all students have access to our exceptional sports facilities, from the cardio and power gyms to the six grass and two 3G pitches and the human performance laboratory.
We’ll give you the coaching and support you need to reach your potential and, as a sports student at Hartpury, you’ll benefit from working with elite athletes and top level coaches from our eight academies in an environment that’s as close as it gets to a professional club.
We offer everything from Honours and Foundation degrees through to postgraduate study with programmes including Sports Therapy, Sport and Exercise Science and Nutrition, Sports Coaching, Physical Education and School Sport and Strength and Conditioning. We also offer a wide range of A-levels and BTEC Diplomas, including in Rugby, Coaching and Fitness. See our course pages to find out more.
Hartpury really is the perfect place for talented and aspiring players, as we continue to strive to be at the forefront of developing England’s next generation of internationals.
