BSc (Hons) Equine Science (with Foundation Year)

Benefit from world-class facilities and world-class expertise. Learn from lecturers who are specialists in their subject areas. Gain industry experience at our international equine events.

Four years full-time (five years with Sandwich Year)

Part-time options available

On this applied biological science-based programme, students learn the fundamental principles of a range of topics during the first year in preparation for more specialist subject areas in the following years, when optional modules allow students to tailor their degree to their own interests and career ambitions. Key strands include Nutrition, Therapy and Rehabilitation, Breeding, Behaviour and Welfare and Health and Disease. Students on this degree programme will learn valuable research skills, enabling them to pursue advanced research projects, especially in their final year dissertation, and benefit from Hartpury’s extensive resources and staff expertise.

Trips are often run in association with specific modules and these are run on a cost recovery basis only, with students given significant time to be able to plan for such expenses. A number of modules also invite guest speakers from the equine and related industries, as well as from other academic institutions. The international exchange programme with Delaware College in the USA can provide a cultural experience as well as an opportunity to gain credits toward the degree, while the sandwich year option enables students to gain valuable work experience that also supports the development and widening of their skills base and key contacts within the equine industry.

A degree with a foundation year is a subject-specific, one year of full-time study at level 0 prior progressing to level 1 on this undergraduate degree.  This programme will suit you if you have a minimum of two passes at A level, or another recognised post-GCSE qualification, even if not in the subject areas needed for level 1 of your chosen degree. You can also apply if you did not obtain high enough grades or you don’t have the necessary standard of English.
