BSc (Hons) Physical Education and School Sport

Study in a professional sports club-style environment. Work with elite athletes as part of our Sports Academy. Benefit from our connections with major sports clubs and governing bodies.

Three years full-time (Part-time options available)

On this degree programme, you will examine and explore the theory and practice of physical education, school sports and coaching science. The focus on applying the theory you learn in a range of educational and community settings, as well as on our own specialist sports campus, will ensure you’re fully equipped for a career in the physical education and physical activity sectors or to engage in further study that will enable you to become a teacher or lecturer.

You will develop your own personal confidence and competence in a range of sports and enhance your knowledge of curriculum requirements; exploring the theories and the latest policies and issues relating to practice in curriculum planning, teaching and assessment.

At Hartpury, you’ll have the opportunity to gain skills and understanding of a range of aquatic, adventure and expressive activities alongside the more traditional school sports, as well as to gain additional qualifications that will boost your CV and teaching and coaching portfolio, enabling you to stand out from the crowd when you graduate.

A key aspect of the programme is gaining a wealth of experience within schools and in other practical situations away from the lecture theatre and across all levels of the award. You’ll engage in work-based learning through all three years of the programme, working with and within our partner schools and school sport community projects.

The programme will provide you with the best possible preparation for progressing into primary and secondary teaching, either via a successful application for a PGCE or directly to a school. You could also look to secure a professional internship or move into a sport development or coaching role. Some graduates choose to move into postgraduate study, including our own Masters in Coaching Science.
