This degree in Racehorse Performance and Rehabilitation is designed for practical equestrian students with a strong interest in working in the racing industry. It would also suit people who are currently involved in racing and are looking for career progression. The degree brings together Hartpury’s extensive experience in sport horse performance analysis and rehabilitation and our excellent links with the racing industry to offer students a new and exciting graduate route into racing.

On this degree, you will engage in study trips and a work placement to gain the experience, knowledge and skillset essential for employment in the racing world. You will also learn from racing industry professionals who will come into the classroom and share their wealth of experience with you as well as spending time within the Hartpury Equine Therapy Centre so you experience the latest scientific approaches to racehorse training and rehabilitation post injury. 

The first year of the programme aims to help you establish a foundation knowledge and understanding of how the racehorse operates, including explaining how functional anatomy and physiology, nutrition, genetics and health combine to underpin performance and success. You will also learn about international racehorse management and the different facets that make up the global racing industry.

The second year takes the fundamental knowledge you have learned and builds on this by exploring in more detail the key factors and principles which underpin training and make a successful racehorse.  The final year of the degree examines racehorse performance in more detail. You will also study equine sports medicine, which will enhance your understanding of the impact of injury and disease on both short and long term performance. You could also explore veterinary practices and enhance your understanding of injury and disease, as well as veterinary and industry approaches to managing these to promote a successful return to racing.

The racehorse performance and rehabilitation degree can be completed full-time in three years, or four years with an optional sandwich year spent working within the horseracing, therapy or wider equine industry. Part-time routes are also available. The course incorporates several opportunities for ‘live’ projects and a placement will be an essential component within the second year of study for all students.

Students are encouraged to engage in various trips and visits as part of the programme.  While many of these are included in the course fees, there is the opportunity to engage in additional significant study tours, experiencing international racing practices in person.  It is estimated these costs will be approximately £1800.

Students will be encouraged to engage in various trips and visits during their degree studies, which will allow them to experience the horseracing business environment first hand and provide key networking opportunities for students to build their contacts and possible mentors, opening doors to the array of graduate careers on offer in this sector. While many of these are included in the course fees, there will also the opportunity to engage in additional significant study tours, including experiencing international racing practices. It is estimated these costs could be approximately £1800.

As well as core modules, students on the racehorse performance and rehabilitation degree will have the opportunity to pick from a range of optional modules, enabling them to tailor the degree to their personal strengths and areas of industry interest.

Horseracing and its related industries offer many varied and exciting dream careers all over the world. Graduates from this degree will have a strong working knowledge and practical experience of the racing industry, combined with the ability to apply scientific principles to inform training practices, analyse performance and be part of the racehorse rehabilitation team.

Several Hartpury graduates have gone on to forge successful careers within the horseracing industry, including marketing manager at Thirsk and York racecourses, an exciting graduate placements with the British Horseracing Authority with Newmarket Jockey Club Racecourses and working for the Irish National Stud. A former Hartpury student has even gone on to become the UK’s youngest racehorse trainer! Others have gone on to careers in sports therapy and rehabilitation for horse and rider.

How to apply for this course

Entry Requirements

GCSE | A minimum of 5 GCSE A* to C, (or 9 to 4 where numeric grades are being awarded), including English Language and Mathematics

A Level | Typical offer is BBC or equivalent. This must include a minimum of two A Levels including one in a Biological Science (excluding General Studies) 

Level 3 Extended Diploma subjects/grades | Typical offer is a DMM in an Extended Diploma or equivalent in a relevant subject
