Four Years Full-time (five with sandwich year)

Part-time options available

With a strong focus on gaining practical experience in a range of subjects and settings relevant to your future career within this growing industry, this degree will provide you with the knowledge and understanding of the scientific principles that underpin sporting performance.

You will develop an understanding of the physiological, psychological and biomechanical demands of sport and exercise and learn how to apply this in practical situations. You will also learn how specific sport science teams work together to optimise athlete performance and how to interact with athletes most effectively so that you can apply your knowledge.

During your first year, you will focus on the physiological, psychological and biomechanical principles that inform sport performance. In the following years, you’ll be able to choose from a range of optional modules that will enable you to focus your studies on your areas of interest within sport and exercise science and open doors to your dream career within the industry. With our elite sports academy on site, you will have many opportunities to work with athletes in sports including rugby, football, netball, modern pentathlon, rowing and golf. You will benefit from links with the sporting industry that are fully integrated in the work we do with local sporting professionals, teams and related businesses.

Lectures will be supported by practicals and seminars so that you can apply and discuss the content you learn. Some modules also include guest speakers and external trips to boost your knowledge of the industry and offer an insight into future employment opportunities. You can also choose modules that will help you to develop your advanced academic and research skills so that you can pursue your own research and dissertation projects in the final year.

A degree with a foundation year is a subject-specific, one year of full-time study at level 0 prior progressing to level 1 on this undergraduate degree. This programme will suit you if you have a minimum of two passes at A level, or another recognised post-GCSE qualification, even if not in the subject areas needed for level 1 of your chosen degree. You can also apply if you did not obtain high enough grades or you don’t have the necessary standard of English.
