About my degree

I actually came back to Hartpury after travelling around New Zealand and Australia on a gap year, where I decided I’d like a career in farming. I had previously studied A Levels at Hartpury College. I studied a Foundation degree in Agriculture. I do not come from an agricultural background, so the theory and practical lessons helped me learn the skills I needed. I also took a few short courses in tractor driving and spraying available at Hartpury to boost my practical skills. I enjoyed the business management aspect of the course so much that I decided to take a home study course in bookkeeping on top of my degree. I qualified as an assistant bookkeeper in 2015. At the end of my studies, I gained a distinction and won the Berkeley Hunt Agricultural Award for top final year student on my course

My career since graduating

After completing my degree, I was offered a stockperson position straight away at a family run organic pig farm in the Cotswolds. Here I could put everything I had learnt at university into practise! I stayed there until 2016, when my fiancé James and I took the leap and moved to Saskatchewan, Canada. Currently, James manages a 13,000 acre arable farm growing durum, peas, lentils and barley. I am working in our local accountants as a bookkeeper for agricultural clients. We are currently looking into financial funding to start our own farm.

How Hartpury helped get me there

Hartpury taught me all I needed to progress in the agricultural industry and gave me exciting opportunities that have led to a new adventure here in Canada.
