You’ll be more than just a number as an animal student at Hartpury University Centre. With small teaching groups and your own personal tutor, your lecturers will support you as an individual to achieve your ambitions, whether that’s working in animal science, welfare and conservation or in animal therapy-related roles.

Our animal degree courses include Bioveterinary Science, Applied Animal Science, including with a therapy option, Behaviour and Welfare and Animal Management. And if you’re a more practical learner, our Foundation degrees can be a great option, with the opportunity to top-up to the Honours degree later. Plus we offer part-time and flexible study routes, which can help you fit your studies around your current work and family commitments. New for January 2017, we have a Higher Education Diploma Professional Studies in Veterinary Nursing, alongside our Foundation and Honours degrees in Veterinary Nursing and Equine Veterinary Nursing.

Every aspect of our specialist campus is designed to equip students with the skills, knowledge and experience they need to open the door to their dream career.

Choosing Hartpury for your animal degree means....

  • Studying in a unique environment with our 360-hectate estate as your classroom
  • Access to excellent facilities that provide real world experiences
  • Opportunities to get hands on with Hartpury’s extensive animal collection
  • Outstanding specialist staff in a research activity community
  • Extensive animal industry links locally, in the UK and overseas

Our Animal students are able to learn about and work with a wide variety of small and large domestic and exotic species – not only with our on-site animal collection but at the farm and in the canine hydrotherapy and equine therapy centres. We’ve even got a new dog agility arena! It’s the best possible preparation for a career in the industry.

Our dedicated teaching staff will be there to support you every step of the way in our close-knit community, while industry standard facilities and exceptional opportunities for work experience and trips will bring your subject to life.

While students have completed work placements in the Seychelles, Kenya, Vietnam, New Zealand and across the UK, many of our animal degree courses also offer the chance of a field trip in a wildlife reserve in South Africa.

Hartpury also offers a wide range of additional courses and training that you can undertake alongside your degree to boost your CV and further explore the areas you are interested in – not only in animal but in agriculture, equine and sport too.

One week each semester is set aside without formally timetabled lectures to help support your studies and allow time for additional courses and specialist trips. Recently, these have included an introduction to canine hydrotherapy and first aid for pet owners.

Our graduates have gone on to some amazing careers, including working in conservation projects all over the world, in zoo education and animal training and in animal charities throughout the UK and beyond, while others go on to work in veterinary medicine, in research laboratories and to teach.

Take for example, George Angell, who is working as a National Park Field Officer in New Zealand, Jenna Mayo – a dog handler and trainer for the British Army and Laura Cox, who is a published author and researcher.
