HELP THE STARS OF THE SPORTING AND EQUINE WORLD GET BACK ON THEIR FEET - Study for a therapy degree

Not everyone can reach the dizzy heights of professional sport but what about the people pulling the strings behind the scenes, helping the best of the best to be at the top of their game?

If you want a career treating, managing and rehabilitating sporting injuries, then Hartpury University Centre’s Sports Therapy and other therapy-related degree programmes could set you on the perfect path.

As well as gaining an industry-recognised qualification accredited by the Society of Sports Therapists (need to include the logo on the page somewhere), you’ll benefit from gaining a wealth of practical and real world experience on and off site. To get a flavour of what life is like as a therapy degree student at Hartpury, why not watch our course video?

So why Hartpury for a therapy degree?

Our students benefit from developing their skills in a specialist sports and equine environment where they have the unique opportunity to work with elite squads and individual athletes and riders across our 10 sports programmes as well as potentially with clients of all ages and with differing levels of sporting abilities and lifestyles.

You'll be perfectly placed to provide pitchside and event support, injury treatment and rehabilitation and you'll have access to our cross-training gym, spa baths, artificial all-weather pitches, performance laboratories and physiotherapy and rehabilitation suites.

Hartpury's outstanding facilities also attract international teams, including the Scotland and USA international teams during Rugby World Cup 2015 and New Zealand’s Eventing team, as well as hosting three international equine events.

Our courses

On our Sports Therapy degree, not only will you treat and rehabilitate athletes from across our 10 sporting academies in a supervised clinic, you’ll take part in dissections to enhance your anatomy knowledge, participate in injury-related research and work with professional athletes and support youth athletes off-site while being supervised by a professional.

The course offers an optional sandwich year spent gaining invaluable experience and contacts in a practice setting, with the chance to complete your placement in Hartpury’s own Sports Injury Clinic if you choose.

And with small class sizes, you’ll be supported as an individual to achieve your dreams and pursue your interests by staff who include sports therapists, physiotherapists, strength and conditioners, nutritionists, physiologists and biomechanists.

And if a career in the rehabilitation of riders is your dream, Hartpury also offers a unique Integrated Masters degree in Sports Therapy (Equestrian), which combines undergraduate and postgraduate levels of study. This degree provides a national first – the opportunity to graduate as an accredited Sports Therapist with the Society of Sports Therapists, specialising in equestrian.

It can be completed in four years or five years with the option of a sandwich year spent practising what you have learned and gaining valuable practical and real world experience to boost your CV, as well as making key contacts.

Students will work with grass roots riders up to elite level to athletes from a wide range of sports, developing the skills required to establish a client base in the future.

Be the next chapter in our success story

Our contacts in the sports industry are second to none, helping our students to secure some really exciting work placements and opening doors when they graduate.

One of our students recently completed a work placement with the Natal Sharks Super Rugby team in South Africa while graduate, Dee Holdsworth, runs her own successful company that offers therapeutic services for both horses and riders, specialising in rider and equine sports massage and strength and conditioning to optimise performance.

Dee (below) is also the chairman of the Equine Sports Massage Association (ESMA) - the youngest in its history – and has worked with Horse and Hound Magazine to produce a series of videos focusing on rider exercises to improve flexibility, strength and fitness.

My time at Hartpury ignited my passion for equine therapy. I work with a number of elite riders and nothing beats seeing them do well, especially knowing we have worked together to get horse and rider fit for competition.
