Our courses

The BSc (Hons) and Foundation Sport Coaching degrees at Hartpury strive to be different. We engage in a variety of real world coaching issues, seek to inspire through challenging, stimulating and industry-related activities and develop students equipped with the knowledge, skills and attitude to be the best they can become.

You’ll learn in and beyond the ‘classroom’ - on the field, in the sports hall, in the gym and in the workplace. While this degree is essentially for aspiring coaches, it also includes aspects of sports training and testing, performance analysis, sport development and sport psychology. In this way, it broadens students’ horizons.

Students on the Honours degree can apply for the International Coaching Cultures Experience trip, offering the chance to visit clubs within Europe and potentially America, experiencing closed training seasons and interacting with the coaches and players. Watch the video of our coaching students on a field trip to Barcelona here.

On our Physical Education and School Sport degree, the focus is on applying the theory you learn in a range of educational and community settings, as well as on our own campus, and you’ll have the opportunity to gain skills and understanding of a range of aquatic, adventure and expressive activities alongside the more traditional school sports.

Students on our coaching and school sport degrees are also able to complete UK Coaching Certificates alongside your degree, with Hartpury being an approved educational centre for Rugby Union and the Football Association, and to participate in additional sport courses and workshops, for example in athletics and handball.

Be the next chapter in our success story

Our contacts in the sports industry are second to none, helping our students to secure exciting work placements on and off campus and opening doors when they graduate. Take Jordan Turner, who is on a coaching placement with the West Bromwich Albion FC satellite academy.

And there are so many opportunities to gain real world experience on our specialist campus. Take Sports Coaching student, Jes Robson, who is helping the next generation of potential Great Britain rowers as a coaching intern with the rowing programme at Hartpury, and Justin Smith, who is the performance analyst and team manager for National League One table-toppers, Hartpury RFC, and our University Centre and College first team rugby squads.

While our Physical Education and School Sport students all go out on placement to schools, we regularly welcome schools on to campus too, with students supporting the planning and delivery of events like the Gloucestershire School Games and tag rugby tournaments.

Our graduates have gone on to their dream careers in a variety of roles, from becoming primary and secondary school teachers to coaches and performance analysts for professional clubs and international organisations and setting up their own successful businesses. One of them is even now leading the new women’s football programme at Hartpury while another is a performance analyst at Liverpool Football Club!

Now I’m in my third year of my Sports Coaching degree, I’m the lead coach for the 14 to 16-year-olds at Gloucester Hartpury rowing club and I have 30 athletes training with me at various levels. I’ve also had the opportunity to work with the Great Britain Para Rowing Development team. My time at Hartpury has been fantastic for my coaching CV.
