Course Overview
This one year course is for students who wish to pursue a career in the animal management industry and is the equivalent of 1 ½ A-levels in one year.
Our department is equipped with a wide variety of animal species and you will have additional experience with farm livestock, horses, and dogs which will provide you with valuable experience and education of the animal sector.
This course will allow you to progress onto the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Animal Management (2nd Year) and equip you with the equivalent of 3 A-Levels in 2 years allowing further progression to university or position you well to move into the animal industry directly from its completion.
5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above to include English Language and Maths.
The units listed below reflect the subjects you will cover on this course but are subject to change:
- Animal Biology
- Animal Welfare and Ethics
- Practical Animal Husbandry
- Animal Behaviour
- Animal Health and Diseases
- Work Experience in the Animal Sector
- Animals in Boarding Establishments
This course will include a range of different assessment methods, including written exams.
During this programme, you will be expected to undertake a block of work experience which will allow you to broaden your knowledge, understanding and skills in practical industry live situations.
On successful completion of this course at Merit or Distinction level and a suitable reference from a tutor, you are able to progress onto the Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Animal Management. Alternatively, you may decide that this is the time at which you wish to move into the world of employment and step into industry.

- Pet shop owner
- Kennel or cattery worker
- Veterinary assistant
- Receptionist
- Animal collection worker or technician
- Carer or warden within charity organisations such as the RSPCA or Blue Cross
- Dog handler or trainer.
