Gain applied knowledge and practical experience in the field of elite horse performance on this foundation degree. Focus on the latest industry practices and undertake work-based learning. Develop your skills to work with horses at the highest competitive levels.

This hands-on course will give you the experience required to work within the performance horse industry. This could be as a top-level groom or yard manager. You’ll develop your skills while undertaking valuable industry experience to ensure you’re ready for your career when you graduate from the course. You’ll benefit from industry-leading facilities, including our commercial equine therapy and rider performance centres. Our relationships with local and national equine businesses will provide opportunities for you to gain a feel for life in industry. 

You’ll focus on maximising equine performance with an emphasis on training, management, and the nutritional requirements of competing horses. Industry-focused modules will prepare you to make important decisions in your chosen career.

In your first year you’ll study a wide range of topics as you assess current industry practices, and begin to understand what’s involved in the management of equine facilities. You’ll also explore health and disease, and look at equine anatomy. You’ll then tailor your studies to suit your interests and career goals through a range of exciting optional modules. On successful completion of this course, you’ll have the opportunity to top-up your foundation degree to a full honours degree in one year.

Industry opportunities

A compulsory work placement and optional sandwich year on this degree will enable you to gain essential industry experience. You could gain experience working on our own livery yard, at one of our annual international equine events or with a local or international equine centre. Students have also worked at big equine events including Badminton Horse Trials. You could also complete British Horse Society qualifications with us.

This programme comprises of different modules, which focus on specific subjects. The modular structure of the programme gives you flexibility and choice and you can attend introductory sessions for optional modules before having to finally decide which ones you wish to study.

Learning and assessment

You will be assessed through a mixture of written exams, practical exams and coursework. Many of the modules will be marked based on a mixture of assessment types, whilst others will be based solely on one type of assessment.

Graduate destinations

As an equine graduate you may go on to work as an equine scientist, manager or rehabilitation therapist. You could also work in racecourses, event management, teaching or biomechanics. Recent graduate destinations have included:

  • Equine Management (BSc Hons) Level 6 Top-up

Entry Requirements

GCSE | A minimum of 5 GCSE A* to C, (or 9 to 4 where numeric grades are being awarded) or equivalent, to include English Language, Mathematics and a Science.

A Level | Typical offer is CC-CDD or equivalent. This must  include a minimum of one A Level preferably in a Biological Science. 

Vocational award | Typical offer is a MMP-MPP in an Extended Diploma or equivalent in a relevant subject.

If you have not studied a Biological Science at Level 3, you will need to complete an equivalent science module as part of this programme.

We look to see evidence of a practical equine background in the personal statement

We welcome students with equivalent qualifications, including Access and the International Baccalaureate. Contact the admissions team to discuss.

We may interview mature applicants and those with non-traditional qualifications.

Previous learning towards a university-level qualification or relevant work experience may count as credit for this course. Please contact our admissions team.
