FdSc Sports Coaching

Gain the knowledge and industry experience you need to be an effective sports coach. You’ll be supported to develop your own professional portfolio of coaching experiences, ready for your career.

The focus of this qualification is on practical learning experiences, which will give you the expertise you need to be a successful sports coach. 220 hours of work experience, which could be in a school, with a professional sports club or another setting, will boost your job prospects and help you make important industry contacts for your future career.

From day one, you’ll focus on coaching excellence and meeting industry standards and demands. In your first year different modules will give you a strong understanding of effective sports coaching. You’ll learn about sports development and sports leadership, as well as undertaking your first coaching work placement. Your second year will see you focus your studies in the direction you want to take your coaching career. You’ll complete your second placement in industry, choose modules to suit your interests and learn about industry research and innovation.  

Throughout your degree you’ll be supported to develop your own professional portfolio of coaching experiences. This means that when you graduate you’ll have something to impress employers with, as you showcase your coaching expertise and philosophy.

On successful completion of the course, you could choose to progress into employment or top-up your qualification to a full BSc honours degree through a one-year top-up qualification.

Industry opportunities

You’ll undertake 220 hours of work experience in industry during your course. This could include making the most of opportunities on campus, working with our professional teams and athletes from our Sports Academy programmes. We have great partnerships with local schools, the Football Association and the Rugby Football Union, as well as with Active Gloucestershire and Gloucester Athletics. All students can attend our annual Club Night to meet professionals from local sports clubs and explore opportunities.

Teaching

This programme comprises of different modules, which focus on specific subjects. The modular structure of the programme gives you flexibility and choice and you can attend introductory sessions for optional modules before having to finally decide which ones you wish to study.

Learning and assessment

You will be assessed through a mixture of written exams, practical exams and coursework. Many of the modules will be marked based on a mixture of assessment types, whilst others will be based solely on one type of assessment.

Career options include working as a coach in the professional or amateur sports sectors, coaching or teaching in primary or secondary education, working in sport development roles. Graduates have recently progressed into:

Entry Requirements

GCSE | A minimum of 5 GCSE A* to C, (or 9 to 4 where numeric grades are being awarded) or equivalent, to include English Language and Mathematics.

A Level | Typical offer is CC-CDD or equivalent. This must  include a minimum of one A Level preferably in a Biological Science, Sports Studies or PE subject.

Vocational award | Typical offer is a MPP-MMP in an Extended Diploma or equivalent in a relevant subject.

We welcome students with equivalent qualifications, including Access and the International Baccalaureate. Contact the admissions team to discuss.

We may interview mature applicants and those with non-traditional qualifications.

Previous learning towards a university-level qualification or relevant work experience may count as credit for this course. Please contact our admissions team.
