Progress into your equine business management degree through a foundation year. Develop essential skills in business enterprise and management, and undertake work experience in industry. Benefit from world-class facilities including an equine therapy centre, rider performance centre and a livery yard with over 200 horses.

You’ll have plenty of opportunities to experience equine business behind the scene on this degree. Students gain experience at our regular international and national equine competitions and events, as well as our commercial equine therapy and rider performance centres on campus.

This foundation year pathway provides an alternative route into degree-level study. It’s ideal for those who need to gain subject-specific knowledge and skills in order to progress onto the full BSc qualification.

You’ll develop the knowledge you need to succeed in a commercial equine environment, covering core business subjects including finance, management, marketing and strategy. A range of exciting optional modules will enable you to apply this to the areas of the equine industry you’re most passionate about. You could focus on horse performance, understand the science behind equine nutrition or use the most advanced techniques and equipment to return them to full health through therapy.

As you advance through your course, further business-related modules will allow you to direct your studies towards the areas of industry that most interest you. You’ll have the chance to experience the planning and organisation behind successful event management, delve more deeply into the financial side of business through accounting or explore the equine sport and hospitality industry.

During your studies you’ll be able to study a semester of your degree at an overseas institution in the USA. You’ll also have the opportunity to complete an industry-recognised Institute of Leadership and Management award, giving you the skills and knowledge to manage a commercial team.

Industry opportunities

You’ll undertake a compulsory work placement in year two, allowing you to observe work in the industry and put what you’ve learned into practice. Students have recently completed placements at British Dressage, Hartpury’s own International Horse Trials event, as well at the BETA Trade Fair and Cirencester Park Polo Club. You could work in variety of roles including media and marketing, sales, or sponsorship and events. You could also get more extensive industry experience during an optional sandwich year placement.

Learning and assessment

This programme comprises of different modules, which focus on specific subjects. The modular structure of the programme gives you flexibility and choice and you can attend introductory sessions for optional modules before having to finally decide which ones you wish to study. You will be assessed through a mixture of written exams, practical exams and coursework. Graduate destinations

As an equine graduate you may go on to work as an equine scientist, manager or rehabilitation therapist. You could also work in racecourses, event management, teaching or biomechanics. Recent graduate destinations have included:

How to apply for this course

Entry Requirements

GCSE | A minimum of 5 GCSE A* to C, (or 9 to 4 where numeric grades are being awarded), including English Language and Mathematics

All applications for the Foundation year will be considered individually, however evidence of previous relevant study at level 3 (i.e. A Level, BTEC etc) is required.

We welcome students with equivalent qualifications, including Access and the International Baccalaureate. Contact the admissions team to discuss.

We may interview mature applicants and those with non-traditional qualifications. 

Previous learning towards a university-level qualification or relevant work experience may count as credit for this course. Please contact our admissions team.
