BSc (Hons) Equine Science with Therapy

Benefit from world-class facilities and world-class expertise. Learn from lecturers who are specialists in their subject areas. Gain industry experience at our international equine events.

Explore the fundamentals of health and rehabilitation on this applied equine science degree.  Learn in our specialist labs. Gain experience in our commercial Equine Therapy Centre and undertake a supported work placement in industry as part of your degree.

Central to this course is equine health and rehabilitation, including the impact that diseases and disorders have on the horse’s rehabilitation. You’ll explore a range of diagnostic techniques, including x-rays, ultrasound and laser technology, to identify different health issues and conditions. Exercise anatomy and physiology are also integral subjects, as you examine how the horse’s body works and evaluate the impact of exercise, exploring differences in, for example, sprint and endurance activities. You’ll also develop your expertise in biomechanical and behavioural aspects that impact on overall function and performance - at both grassroots and competition level.

To help prepare you for graduate employment, you’ll gain experience in our commercial equine therapy centre, equipped with its own water treadmill to rehabilitate horses and prepare them for competition. This will be especially prevalent if you choose to pursue the specialist hydrotherapy module in your final year – you’ll apply theory to practice with real horses undergoing therapy treatment. You’ll also have the opportunity to go off-site to experience various training and rehabilitation centres across the county.

You’ll apply theory to practice, hearing from guests in lectures and undertaking a work placement in an equine therapy centre to prepare yourself for employment. You won’t be qualified to be a therapist at the end of this degree, but you will have expert knowledge and experience in equine rehabilitation, ready for an exciting career.

Industry opportunities

A work placement in your final year and an optional sandwich year on this degree means you can gain valuable experience in industry, either in the UK or internationally. Students have recently undertaken work placements at our Equine Therapy Centre,  as well as at rehabilitation facilities that specialise in the retraining of racehorses, veterinary care centres and re-homing centres including the Blue Cross. You could also take part in our exchange programme, studying a semester of your degree at Deleware Valley University, USA.
