BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Sciences (with Foundation Year)

Study in a professional sports club-style environment. Work with elite athletes as part of our Sports Academy. Benefit from our connections with major sports clubs and governing bodies.

Benefit from industry-standard scientific equipment as you explore all aspects of human performance through sport. You’ll develop essential sports science skills during a foundation year before progressing into the first year of the BSc degree.

You’ll benefit from our excellent sports facilities as you put into practice what you learn, managing athlete health, fitness, strength and power levels to maximise their potential. This is a fast-growing industry with plenty of opportunities to apply your skills.

This foundation year option is an alternative route into degree-level study. It’s ideal for those who need to gain subject-specific knowledge and skills in order to progress onto the full BSc qualification.

During your time with us you’ll learn from lecturers who are also industry professionals, whether that’s in biomechanics, physiology or psychology. You could also have the chance to work alongside one of our competing sports teams or elite-level athletes on campus.

Your first year will give you theoretical understanding of a range of subjects. You’ll examine and understand the science behind the fascinating areas of the mechanics of movement, sports psychology, health and exercise. As you progress through the course you’ll be able to tailor your studies towards what you want to do when you graduate.

From your second year you’ll take a more hands-on approach, focusing on industry techniques to get you ready for employment. You’ll make the most of our professional-style sports campus, learning in our human performance laboratory and biomechanics area as part of our new Sports Academy developments. You’ll get hands-on with sports people and specialist equipment, bringing together everything you’ve learnt to make a real difference to the sportspeople you’re working with.

Industry opportunities

You’ll have lots of opportunities to gain experience outside of your course, from working in sports clubs to private and public healthcare facilities. You will also have opportunities to work with schoolchildren, helping to tackle obesity and promote healthy living as part of the Hartlinx project. You’ll be encouraged to complete ISAK* training to better understand human growth, exercise, performance and nutrition. You could also volunteer with our sports teams and athletes through our on-site Sports Academy. BASES** student membership is also free as part of this course.
