Completion of this programme will give eligibility to the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Veterinary Nursing Register and allow you to practise as a legal Registered Veterinary Nurse*.

You’ll benefit from outstanding facilities, including a Veterinary Nursing Clinical Skills centre, commercial equine and canine therapy centres, small animal house, canine hydrotherapy treadmill and pool, and commercial farm. You’ll benefit from a qualified and experienced teaching team – all RCVS Registered Veterinary Nurses or Registered Equine Veterinary Nurses with industry experience. The programme is fully accredited by the RCVS Veterinary Nursing Regulatory body.

In your first year you’ll develop your knowledge in a range of essential areas including anatomy, animal husbandry, pharmacy management, patient care and professional practice. You’ll have access to a diverse range of animals on campus including exotic, domestic, reptiles and livestock. Alongside this, you’ll prepare for your second-year of clinical work placement in an approved RCVS veterinary nursing training practice, which will be supported by your clinical coach and clinical tutor.

Your third year offers a fantastic opportunity for you to advance your veterinary nursing knowledge and skills in areas such as anaesthesia, surgical nursing and diagnostic skills. In your fourth year you will be able to enhance your veterinary nursing expertise by gaining further professional veterinary nursing skills such as coaching and advance your knowledge of an industry-relevant area that interests you. Your degree will culminate with a research-based dissertation in an agreed subject. This will further develop existing industry research or focus on an area not previously covered. Students co-publish research with lecturers and present at industry conferences. On successful completion of your final year you’ll be eligible to join the RCVS Veterinary Nursing Register and begin practising as a fully qualified Veterinary Nurse.

Industry opportunities

In your second year you’ll complete a work-based clinical placement (currently 1,800 hours) in an approved RCVS veterinary nursing training practice, which will allow you to develop and gain competence in core Veterinary Nursing Clinical Skills ready for qualifying as a Registered Veterinary Nurse. We have excellent partnerships with UK based veterinary practices. You could also gain industry experience in our Equine Therapy Centre, working alongside vets and para-professionals to rehabilitate horses from injury or illness.

Teaching

This programme comprises of different modules, which focus on specific subjects. The modular structure of the programme gives you flexibility and choice and you can attend introductory sessions for optional modules before having to finally decide which ones you wish to study.

Learning and assessment

You will be assessed through a mixture of written exams, practical exams and coursework. Many of the modules will be marked based on a mixture of assessment types, whilst others will be based solely on one type of assessment.

Accreditations

Completion of this programme will give you eligibility to join the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Veterinary Nursing Register and allow you to practise as a Registered Veterinary Nurse. Entry Requirements

GCSE | A minimum of 5 GCSE A* to C, (or 9 to 4 where numeric grades are being awarded) or equivalent, to include English Language, Mathematics and a Science. 

A Level | Typical offer is BBC-CCC or equivalent. This must  include a minimum of two A Levels including A Level Biology.

Vocational award | Typical offer is a DMM-MMM in an Extended Diploma or equivalent in a relevant subject.

We welcome students with equivalent qualifications, including Access and the International Baccalaureate. Contact the admissions team to discuss.

Successful students will need to obtained at least two weeks work experience in a UK veterinary practice
