Make a difference to the lives of animals, right from day one of your degree. Learn in our labs and study spaces with our on-site animal collection. It includes meerkats, prairie dogs and wallabies. 

Immerse yourself in the practical application of animal biology. Progress into degree-level study through a Foundation year. Work with a range of animals on site including dogs, horses and livestock. Graduate ready to progress into employment or further study.

Explore a range of zoology-related subjects before tailoring your studies to suit your interests and career goals on this degree. You’ll also be able to experience international conservation and fieldwork as part of an exciting field trip to Mankwe Wildlife Reserve, South Africa.

The degree provides a fantastic opportunity for you to study a range of zoology related subjects. You’ll work in our labs as well as with different animals both on and off campus – exotics, domestics, invertebrates, livestock and wildlife. The course offers a variety of modules including animal health and disease, wildlife and zoo management, nutrition, biodiversity and animal behaviour, welfare and ethics, animal production and anthrozoology. As you progress you’ll develop your own areas of interest, gaining skills and experience for your career.

You’ll gain experience in our Canine Hydrotherapy Centre and Equine Therapy Centre as part of the animal therapy stream. This will enable you to develop valuable therapeutic knowledge, alongside experiencing multi-disciplinary teams - including vets, physiotherapists and nutritionists - working towards the optimal health or performance of an animal. You’ll gain insights into different career options while you’re here as well valuable knowledge and experience, ready for employment.

Industry opportunities

You’ll be able to gain experience in industry in your second year, as well as through a sandwich year. Students have recently gained professional experience in the UK as well as in new Zealand. We’ll also support you to gain a voluntary role during your studies to help prepare you for your career. Our students gain work and research experience in our therapy centres on campus, as well as at local rescue centres, zoos and wildlife parks. We have strong industry connections, and host regular guest lectures as well as professionals undertaking practical demonstrations.

Teaching

This programme comprises of different modules, which focus on specific subjects. The modular structure of the programme gives you flexibility and choice and you can attend introductory sessions for optional modules before having to finally decide which ones you wish to study.

Learning and assessment

You will be assessed through a mixture of written exams, practical exams and coursework. Many of the modules will be marked based on a mixture of assessment types, whilst others will be based solely on one type of assessment.

Graduate destinations

As an animal graduate you may go on to work in zoos, aquariums, wildlife parks, rescue, conservation or welfare centres. Studying an animal degree will also give you the transferable skills you need for other graduate careers. Recent graduate destinations have included:

Entry Requirements

GCSE | A minimum of 5 GCSE A* to C, (or 9 to 4 where numeric grades are being awarded), including English Language and Mathematics

A Level | Typical offer is BBB or equivalent. This must include a minimum of two A Levels including one in a Biological Science and excludes General Studies

Level 3 Extended Diploma subjects/grades | Typical offer is a DMM in an Extended Diploma or equivalent in a relevant subject
