Who is the course for?

The qualification is suitable for school leavers or for adults looking for a change in career. It provides a valuable alternative for those candidates who do not have access to the work-based qualifications.

What will I study on the course?

Theory and practical sessions will cover Health & Safety; handling of dogs; bathing and drying techniques; preparing dogs for styling and the correct selection of shampoo and equipment as well as basic trimming techniques. 

What makes this course special?

The tutor who will be instructing you has worked in the grooming industry.

You will be taught in the colleges grooming facility that is fully equipped with a wide range of equipment that you would find in a grooming parlour.

How will I be assessed?

The course is assessed by the completion of 7 practical assessments and a theoretical knowledge GOLA (on-line) assessment.

Will this course lead to a qualification?

On successful completion of this course, you will gain a NPTC Level 2 Certificate in Dog Grooming

Can I progress to a higher level qualification?

Yes.  On completion of the Level 2 certificate for Dog Grooming Assistant you can then go on to take the City and Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Dog Grooming.

Entry Requirements

Two GCSEs at grade D or above (any subject)


Candidates must have completed the Hartpury College "Introduction to Dog Grooming" course, or have previous experience. You must be 19+ to attend this course.

Please wear rubber soled shoes and bring a plastic apron.

Candidates are required to provide their own dog models.

All dogs that attend Hartpury College Dog Grooming school must have proof of vaccination or a valid titre test.

Big and hairy dogs (they can be smelly too!) for our students to work on to make them look their best. The dogs will have a bath with high quality shampoo, a blow dry, brush out and nail clip. Dependent on breed we will then de-shed or give them a basic clip. The cost of this service is just £5.

Breeds required (amongst others) are:

Any large, double coated breed:

German Shepherd, Bernese Mountain Dog, Newfoundland, Old English Sheep Dog, Labradoodle, Leonberger, Pyrenean Mountain Dog, Golden Retriever, Husky, Collies, Setters.

For Clipping:

any Poodle Cross (Labradoodle, Cockapoo, Cavapoo, Schnoodle etc), Bichon or Bichon cross - Cavachon, Lhasa Apso, Shihtzu, any Spaniel, Yorkshire Terrier, any cross breed that requires clipping.

We are also offering one day a month where Hartpury staff and members of the public can have dogs groomed that don't fit the requirements to be a dog model to be groomed. They will be groomed by a Level 3 Qualified groomer in our purpose built grooming salon. Prices start from £25 with discount available to Hartpury College Staff.
