When you become a student at Hartpury, you become part of something bigger, part of a community. The ‘pury family’, as we know it, is a very special one indeed.
At Hartpury, there’s a network of support staff to ensure that you make a smooth transition to university life.
You’ll be assigned an academic tutor as soon as you arrive, who is there to provide you with all the support you need to reach your academic goals. And, if you need a friendly ear, our Student Services and Wellbeing Teams can help with guidance and advice on everything from finance and accommodation to health and wellbeing.
The Student Zone
Our Student Zone is a one-stop shop where students can find all the support they need in one place. Set around a central courtyard, students can access:
- Wellbeing services
- Student finance
- Student services
- The Innovation, Careers and Enterprise Centre
- The International team and Admissions
- The Safeguarding team
- IT support
Keeping you safe and well
Emotional problems and stress can affect your studies and finding the courage to ask for help can be hard.
If students are feeling confused, anxious, hurt, angry, depressed or homesick, they are able to speak to a counsellor at Hartpury to help them explore and pursue their goals in a caring, supportive and confidential environment where they feel valued and respected.
The Counselling team offer a drop in service at 12.30pm and 4.30pm every day.
The College also has a Wellbeing Officer who can offer a secure, safe, private environment for you to share your concerns.
Students and staff are actively encouraged and supported to let the safeguarding team know about any concerns they might have about young people on campus. The College also has a designated Child Protection Officer.
The multi-faith Chaplaincy team will help with spiritual and faith issues and also offer a listening ear when students need someone to talk to. They also offer space for quiet reflection or prayer and can also information about faith communities in the local area.
If students need medical advice, they can book an appointment with the college nurse through Student Services.
The Sexual Health Nurse is also available on Thursdays and will provide advice, treatment and referrals. The clinic is based in the Medical Centre in the Student Zone.
Our University students turn to learning support for a variety of reasons; many simply finding the leap from school to university academically challenging. This is no surprise as the way you learn, study and are assessed is likely to be very different to anything you have experienced within the school environment.
Some of our undergraduate and postgraduate students are returning to study after a long break, they may have rusty study skills and perhaps lack confidence and belief in their academic abilities. We also have students with specific learning difficulties/disabilities. At Hartpury, we understand these issues and take pride in the outstanding level of support we can offer all of our students. We are committed to responding to individual learning support and / or disability needs and have resources available to ensure that all prospective students have access to individual guidance and advice. Any concerns will be discussed with you in your initial personal tutorial.
We also know how important it is to have the right support in place as early as possible.
Our Disability Adviser supports students in making applications for Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSAs), helping them to collect the evidence required.
Making a DSA claim is necessary to secure funding in order to finance support such as study skills tuition, ICT equipment and software, as well as medical support equipment.
On this basis, we can offer learning support to those students with a specific learning difficulty such as dyslexia or dyspraxia, a physical or sensory impairment, medical condition or another specific difficulty such as Asperger’s Syndrome or Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). We can also provide access to additional services.

The student advisor is on hand in the University Learning Centre to provide students with information and advice on a wide range of course and programme-related matters, including:
- How university regulations affect you
- Guidance and support through your studies
- Assessment regulations and offences
- Withdrawal and transfer to other programmes
- Extenuating circumstances
- What to do if unforeseen personal circumstances affect your studies or assessments*
We have seen a welcome upward trend here at Hartpury in the number of adults returning to education. Some of our mature students are seeking a career change, wanting to turn their dream of working in sport, with animals or on the land into reality. Others are working in the industry, but are looking to enhance their knowledge and skills. Many more just want to expand their knowledge and have fun at university. If you’re worried that your study skills are a little rusty, then don’t be. Study skills workshops are incorporated into all degree programmes. Studying for a degree is very different and we find that our students who arrive straight out of school or college need this help and support just as much as our mature students.
IT services in the Student Zone can help students with any difficulties they encounter when using the college IT facilities, such as problems printing or connecting to the network.
