Introduction to dog grooming

A three hour workshop to introduce you to the basics of Dog Grooming. Ideal for pet owners wanting to groom their own dogs, or for those who are interested in knowing more about a career in Dog Grooming. As this workshop is for those who wish to be considered for the Level 2 C&G Certificate for Dog Grooming Assistants it will be followed by a one hour initial assessment.

Content for the 3 hour workshop;

  • Learn about the basics of dog grooming
  • Safe handling and bathing techniques
  • What equipment do we use and why? Does this differ between breeds?
  • How to health check a dog and notice changes in its behaviour
  • Nail clipping and ear cleaning
  • How do we choose a shampoo?
  • Brushing and drying styles

The taster workshop costs £60. You will need to wear flat shoes and old clothes as you will get dirty. Please also bring a plastic apron.

You are required to bring a dog with you. To get the most from the session, we suggest you bring a medium to large breed dog such as a Labrador, Golden Retriever, Border Collie and German Shepherds. All dogs that attend Hartpury College Dog Grooming School must have proof of vaccination or a valid titre test which should be brought on the day.

Please note: there is no clipping or hand stripping on this workshop.

After the 3 hour workshop, those who would like to apply for the City and Guilds Level 2 Certificate for Dog Grooming Assistants, are invited to attend a talk from our tutor, Megan. The talk will cover:

  • What the Level 2 course entails
  • How we assess your learning
  • How long is the course? How many dogs do I need?
  • Course dates
  • What can you do after with the qualification
  • Fees, funding and payment options

You will need to wear flat shoes and old clothes as you will get dirty. Please also bring a plastic apron.

Note: Attendance on this course does not entitle an applicant to an automatic place on the City and Guilds Level 2 Certificate for Dog Grooming Assistants.

*Please note that this course is for those aged 19+.

If you wish to attend this course and are under 19 you will not be able to go onto the Level 2 course until you are 19+

In the event of a cancellation by the student, the College will refund tuition fees for each prospective student at the following rates:

I. Over 30 days, full refund of course fee
II. Up to 30 days prior to course start date 50% of course fee refunded
III. Less than 14 days’ notice, nil

If the College postpones the course and is unable to provide a mutually agreeable alternative, any fees will be refunded in full.


Big and hairy dogs (they can be smelly too!) for our students to work on to make them look their best. The dogs will have a bath with a high quality shampoo, a blow dry, brush out and nail clip. Dependent on breed we will then de-shed or give them a basic clip. The cost of this service is just £10.

Breeds required (amongst others) are:

Any large, double coated breed:

German Shepherd, Bernese Mountain Dog, Newfoundland, Old English Sheep Dog, Labradoodle, Leonberger, Pyrenean Mountain Dog, Golden Retriever, Husky, Collies, Setters.

For Clipping:

any Poodle Cross (Labradoodle, Cockapoo, Cavapoo, Schnoodle etc), Bichon, or Bichon cross - Cavachon, Lhasa Apso, Shihtzu, any Spaniel, Yorkshire Terrier, any cross breed that requires clipping.

We are also offering one day a month where Hartpury staff and members of the public can have dogs groomed that don't fit the requirements to be a dog model to be groomed. They will be groomed by a Level 3 Qualified groomer in our purpose built grooming salon. Prices start from £25 with discount available to Hartpury College Staff.
