Hartpury exit Challenge Cup to Cheltenham

Hartpury FC exited the GFA Senior Challenge Cup on Tuesday night following a 2-0 defeat to Cheltenham Town at the 4ED Hartpury Stadium.

First half goals from Sopuru Obieri and Ieuan Bailey were enough to see the Robins through to the semi-finals.

Cheltenham began the game on the front foot, when Obieri saw a driven effort superbly blocked by George Sims inside the opening minute.

The visitors came close again on three minutes when Charlie Caple headed a free kick just wide of the post.

The Acorns opening effort came on seven minutes when Ethan Vaughan saw a bending effort well stopped by Robins goalkeeper, Mamadou Diallo.

But it was the visitors who struck first when Obieri got free in the area before lifting his effort over Joshua Sawyers, in the Acorn goal, on 17 minutes.

It was 2-0 two minutes later through an outrageous strike Bailey, whose effort from 20-yards flew in off the post.

Sawyers denied Caple the opportunity to make it three, on 23 minutes, with a strong front post save after the captain had danced into the area.

The Acorns started the second period the better as O’Rian Reid almost had the side back in the game on 52 minutes, but saw a driven effort brilliantly saved by Diallo.

Three minutes later, the Acorns had an opportunity from the spot, but Tomos Shyamapant could only see his effort cannon back off the bar.

Vaughan saw a free-kick bend just past the post on 68 minutes, before Theo Browne shot straight at Diallo on 70 minutes.

Cheltenham came close to a third on 72 minutes when Caple headed onto the post from a corner.

Archie Hill drove down on goal for Cheltenham, 84 minutes, but saw his driven effort from distance fly high and wide of the Acorns goal.

Reid took aim from distance on 92 minutes but saw his effort deflected just past the post.

Sawyers was back in action on 87 minutes when, Fred King swung at a loose ball in the area but could only divert his effort straight at the Acorns ‘keeper.

Despite an improved second period, the Acorns couldn’t overturn the first half deficit, exiting the competition.

The Acorns are back on the road Saturday, as we visit Melksham Town in the Southern League Div One South, hoping to make it five league games unbeaten.
