Hartpury’s Brett has the gift of the gab

Hartpury student Brett Evans wowed judges with his communication skills as he made it to the final of the ‘Gift of the Gab’ - a competition organised by National Star College.

Brett delivered a fantastic presentation at the college in Ullenwood, near Cheltenham, having been selected as one of four to contest the final.

Students with learning and physical disabilities from across the UK gathered at National Star to take part in the competition, testing their presentation and communication skills and giving them the chance to take part in an educational competition in a fair environment.
Students used a range of media to demonstrate their communication skills and had to present to a panel of judges and in front of a large audience.

Brett made the final after standing out from 25 competitors in the earlier round. The judges were full of praise for his presentation, which was based on the theme ‘talk to me’- and Brett was able to draw upon his own experiences to impress and make it through to the final stage.
Brett, a Level One Land-based Animal Management student at Hartpury, has a benign essential tremor - a movement disorder which can involve a tremor of the arms, hands, fingers or other body parts during voluntary movements.

The 19-year-old said: “It was great to be given the chance to enter the competition, and I was thrilled to get the call to tell me that I had made it to the final.

“My presentation was a lot different to others as I was able to look back on when I was growing up, and the way that people judge each other before even talking to them.”
Brett is now progressing on to a Level Two BTEC Diploma in Animal Management and he hopes this will help him achieve his dream of becoming a veterinary nurse.

He added: “Hartpury has helped me so much as I have been able to get experience at the stables and on the farm. I’m now looking forward to starting my new course in September and continuing to gain experience.”
Emily Wilton, Lecturer in Animal Management, said: “This was the first time we had entered this competition, and we are very proud of Brett and his accomplishment.”
