Students sort the wheat from the chaff


Hartpury Agriculture students were given an in-depth insight into crop production and soil management when top agronomist, Andrew Goodinson, from crop specialists Hutchinsons came in to take them on a crop walk.

Andrew has a particular interest in soil productivity – making more food on the same amount of soil – and agronomists also work to improve the quality of seed and the nutritional value of crops.

Janatha Stout, Head of Agriculture at Hartpury, said: “We looked at one of Hartpury College’s wheat fields and students had the chance to ask questions about diseases, crop nutrition and use of fertilisers.
“Introducing these concepts to students means that we are helping to push forward food productivity for the next generation.”
