Hartpury first college in county to scoop national equality award


Hartpury has become the first Gloucestershire-based college to be nationally recognised by the Equality Standard for their commitment to equality and diversity.

The specialist land-based, sports and equestrian centre has been awarded the Equality Gold Standard Award thanks to its continued promotion of equality and diversity within the workplace. The award is designed to help organisations like Hartpury to embed equality in their daily activities.

Hartpury’s HR Manager, Vicky McBride, said: “We completed a detailed portfolio of evidence to show we had met the criteria and we also had an assessor visit the college to talk to some of our staff and witness our innovative practices first-hand.”

The college need to show that its policies and procedures actively promote equality, that its business and leadership has commitment to equality and that it continues to promote a diverse culture.

Equality North East’s Head of Operations, Andrea Johnson, delivered the good news to the college. She said: “Hartpury College has worked extremely hard to achieve the Equality Standard Gold Award and their commitment to equality and diversity is apparent in their Single Equality Action Plan as well as their Equality and Diversity objectives.

“Both of these are reviewed every two months and fed back to the Senior Management Team but also cascaded throughout the organization, which ensures all staff and students are aware not only of equality and diversity but also what is being done to achieve it.

“The lessons delivered to students are differentiated and include role models like women in agriculture and external speakers from places such as Riding for the Disabled.

“Furthermore, supporting students are from all over the world impacts positively on equality and diversity by bringing different cultural experiences to the college, students, staff and local community.”

Hartpury will continue to be assessed against the Equality Standard and will be reviewed again in 2016.
