Hartpury cream of the crop as farm shoots to the top at root, fruit and grain awards!


Hartpury agriculture students’ hard work has paid off with success at the Gloucestershire root, fruit and grain awards.

Students on the BTEC courses in Agriculture and Land-based Mechanisation helped Hartpury’s Home Farm to claim top spot in the spring barley category while also being awarded the Kirkwood Cup for first place in the clamp silage category.

Up against eight other entries in the spring barley category, Hartpury’s crop – which is cultivated by the students studying at the college – was judged to be the best on offer in the Gloucestershire region.

Hartpury’s clamp silage, which is also prepped entirely by students, finished top of the pile as well up against 12 other entries in the category. Clamped silage is effectively fodder for farm animals that is clamped and sheeted to remove as much air from it as possible, which can significantly increase milk production.

An annual event, the awards bring together some of the best farms from all over the county and Hartpury were presented with their prizes at an awards dinner at Gloucester Rugby’s Kingsholm Stadium after having their barley and silage inspected on-site at the college.

Peter Lord, Manager of Hartpury’s Home Farm, said: “These awards are fantastic recognition for our students’ skills and provide further proof that the future of the farming industry is in safe hands with them, as they perfect the latest techniques in crop production.”
