Hartpury equine students stepped back in time for a history lesson as they learnt the origin of modern-day riding.
From jousting to Spanish horses, the students found out about how the horse has been used through the ages. They also learnt how these principles underpin our current methods, for example how classic dressage has originated from Spanish horse riding.
Run by Dominic Sewell, from Historic Equitation, and international dressage trainer Peter Maddison-Greenwell, the students learnt how riding and the use of horses has evolved over time. They also got the chance to see some of the equipment that would have been used, such as a knight’s armour!
The history lesson formed part of their Principles of Equitation module on the Level 3 Diploma Horse Management. Grooms Academy student, Lydia Jackson, was also helping behind the scenes as she prepared horses for Dominic and got to experience first-hand the unusual equipment that he uses for displays and demonstrations.
