Nine players with Hartpury ties have got their Women’s Rugby World Cup campaigns up and running after Wednesday’s opening fixtures.
Hartpury graduate Megan Jones (pictured) opened the scoring yesterday as England Women strolled past Spain in the opener to their World Cup defence.
Jones crossed in the first minute of the game to send England on their way to a 56-5 win. Alex Matthews and Amy Cokayne, two former Hartpury students, also got themselves on the scoresheet as England ran in 10 tries.
Recent graduates Sarah Bern and Zoe Aldcroft were also part of the starting 15 alongside former Hartpury women’s rugby coach, Danielle Waterman. Drybrook’s Natasha Hunt, another graduate, is also in the England squad for the tournament.
Wales’ Hannah Jones, another Hartpury graduate, was unfortunately on the losing side as New Zealand won 44-12 in their opening game.
Current student Rebecca de Filippo was set to make her World Cup debut for Wales but had to withdraw through injury. She was replaced by India Berbillion, who will be starting at Hartpury in September.
