Hartpury students named in England rugby squad

Five Hartpury students have been named in the England Women’s Under-20s rugby squad for the 2018-19 season.

Iona Antwis, Emma Sing, Shauna Bennett, Tabitha Copson and Connie Powell, who all play for Gloucester-Hartpury in the Tyrrells Premier 15s, are among 30 players called up by Head Coach Jo Yapp following a recent selection camp.

The Under-20s will play three fixtures this season, against the Army and home and away matches against France.

Jo Yapp said: “This season we have seen a number of good performances at club level in the Tyrrells Premier 15s, which is proving a great platform for player development. We are now looking forward to building towards the three games later in the season.”

Iona is studying A-levels in Biology, Chemistry and PE at Hartpury, while Emma is enrolled on an Level 3 Extended Diploma in Animal Science.

Shauna is taking a BSc (Hons) degree in PE and School Sport, Tabitha is studying a BSc (Hons) degree in Sports Therapy, and Connie is enrolled on a BA (Hons) Sports Business Management degree.

Their Gloucester-Hartpury team-mates Millie Wood, who studied A-levels at Hartpury, Sasha Acheson and Ellie Underwood have been named in a 23-player England Women squad for two National Academy fixtures.

The squad will face a USA Women’s Selects team on Tuesday, 13 November and Canada Women A on Wednesday, 21 November.
