Hartpury University’s Equestrian Research Club recently hosted its final summit of the year, titled Equine Water Treadmills: Fact and Fiction.
The event, held at Hartpury’s Equine Therapy Centre, brought together students, industry professionals, and international experts to explore the practical application of research in equine therapy and performance.
Led by Dr. Kathryn Nankervis, the summit featured both theoretical and practical sessions designed to deepen attendees’ understanding of water treadmill use in equine care. Dr. Nankervis shared insights from her extensive research and 25 years of experience at the Equine Therapy Centre, covering key considerations for working horses on water treadmills. Attendees also participated in practical sessions, observing horses on both dry and water treadmills in various scenarios and discussing tailored exercise plans for individual horses.
The event welcomed external guests, including owners, trainers, and practitioners who regularly use water treadmills, as well as three international experts. Among them was Dr. Isabeau Deckers, a former Hartpury PhD student and now a practicing veterinary physiotherapist in Belgium.
Students and professionals alike benefited from networking opportunities, fostering connections with industry leaders who integrate research into their daily work. Attendees received CPD certificates, a copy of the Equine Water Treadmill Guidelines, and a PDF of the poster detailing suggested water depths for various musculoskeletal conditions.
The summit is part of the Hartpury’s Equestrian Research Club initiative, which aims to bridge the gap between research and practice. Workshops like these provide students with practical experience, knowledge, and valuable networking opportunities to support their future careers. Feedback from students has been overwhelmingly positive, highlighting the value of these events in enhancing their learning and professional development.
Earlier this year, the Equestrian Research Club hosted two other successful summits: Supporting the Performance Horse, led by internal and external professionals, and Feeding Curiosity, focused on equine nutrition.
Hartpury University remains committed to empowering students through innovative research-led initiatives that connect them with industry and equip them with skills needed to excel in their careers. This has no doubt helped with high levels of graduate employability (97% of Hartpury University graduates were in employment, further study, or other purposeful activity (Graduate Outcomes 2024)), placing the institution first in Gloucestershire and in the top 10% of UK universities for graduate employability.
