Visiting Professor recognised with OBE for outstanding contributions to equine welfare

Hartpury University is proud to congratulate Professor Natalie (Nat) Waran, an Honorary Visiting Professor, on being awarded an Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the King’s Birthday Honours list. The award recognises her exceptional services to equine welfare, research, and education on a global scale.

A globally recognised figure in animal welfare science, Professor Waran has also enhanced the student learning experience at Hartpury through her involvement in research-led teaching, guest lectures, and mentorship. Her involvement with the institution not only enriches academic discussions but also strengthens Hartpury University’s position as a leader in equine science and education.

“Professor Waran’s OBE is a wonderful and well-deserved recognition of her continued commitment to improving equine and companion animal welfare through science, advocacy, and education,” said Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Hartpury University, Rosie Scott-Ward. “Her work has inspired students and staff alike and adds tremendous value to our curriculum and research profile.”

With a career spanning several decades, continents, and species, Professor Waran has dedicated her professional life to improving the lives of animals, especially horses, through evidence-based training methods, policy development, and education. She is widely respected for developing innovative tools and approaches to assess animal quality of life, influencing both practice and policy in the equine sector.

Reflecting on the honour, Professor Waran said: “I am extremely honoured to receive this OBE, which I see as recognition not just of my own work, but also of the collaborative efforts of countless colleagues, students and organisations who work tirelessly to advance horse welfare and improve our understanding of their needs.

“I’m privileged to be working with the Hartpury University team to advance equine welfare research and education, enabling equestrians and equine industry stakeholders to make a positive difference to horses’ lives.”
