At Hartpury University, we’ve got one main programme that has direct links to preparing our students for teacher training routes: our BSc (Hons) Physical Education and School Sport. Our students learn from lecturers, some of whom were previously PE teachers themselves, who bring real-world experience to the classroom, preparing students to graduate with the knowledge, skills, and expertise needed to progress onto teacher training routes. Some of our recent graduate destinations include:
- PGCE Primary and Secondary
- Initial Teacher Training
- Teaching assistant, primary school
Upon completion of our BSc (Hons) Physical Education and School Sport degree, many students go on to complete a postgraduate teacher training route to gain qualified teacher status (QTS), which usually take 9 to 12 months to complete full-time. These can be provided by:
- Universities - usually referred to as university-led training
- A school/group of schools - usually referred to as school-led training
- A company or charity - for example, Teach First
Hartpury University provides dedicated tutorship and external visits that support our students with that next step, ensuring they feel well supported and informed to go into this career path as a well-rounded practitioner.
Why choose a Hartpury University course to become a PE teacher?
Our modules:
Our core modules in first, second and third year allow students to gain hands on experience from week one of being on our BSc (Hons) Physical Education and School Sport programme. This is mainly with primary-aged learners, but we empower, offer and encourage students to go out into placement scenarios to experience industry and apply theory to practice.
Our facilities:
We have a range of facilities at Hartpury that support the effective, positive work environments that students learn in. One of those is our high-quality outdoor education classroom, built over numerous years by our Programme Manager of the BSc (Hons) Physical Education and School Sport. We also have a range of spaces such as sports halls, extensive use of inclusive and accessible equipment and outdoor spaces such as grass and 3G pitches.

Develop the skills required to become a PE teacher:
Hartpury University focuses on upskilling its students, the teachers of the future, in various aspects of school sport and coaching. For example, within the BSc (Hons) Physical Education and School Sport degree, students also learn how to deliver swimming in the curriculum, aligning with the government’s effort to ensure all students leave primary school with vital swimming and water safety skills.
Experience working as a PE teacher in the real world:
Read how Hartpury University’s own student George Miller benefit from studying the BSc (Hons) Physical Education and School Sport course:
"I’ve already been at Millbrook Academy getting teaching experience, which gives me the chance to put everything I learn in the classroom into practice. I’ve been responsible for planning and delivering high quality PE and extra-curricular activities across all key stages and I’ll be doing even more placement hours there in my second year."
