Hartpury University and Hartpury College are celebrating the news that alumna Ellie Kildunne is one of six contenders for the 2025 BBC Sports Personality of the Year award, a year after she was named World Rugby’s Women’s Player of the Year 2024.
Ellie, who emerged through Hartpury’s renowned rugby pathway whilst studying A-levels, has enjoyed a phenomenal year on the international stage. A key member of England’s World Cup squad, she delivered a series of world-class performances, becoming one of the tournament’s most electrifying players and a fan favourite for her pace, creativity, and relentless work rate. Ellie’s wider popularity has also been evident in her selection by Heathrow Airport as the ‘voice of Britain’ for their passenger announcements.
She previously combined her academic studies with rugby development at Hartpury, as many students continue to do. Her rapid rise through the ranks, culminating in international caps and World Cup success, continues to inspire current and future Hartpury University and Hartpury College students.
Mick Axtell, Chief Operating Officer at Hartpury University and College, who oversees the rugby pathway, said: “Ellie’s nomination is richly deserved and reflects not only her incredible talent but also her dedication and character. We are immensely proud to see a Hartpury alumna recognised on such a prestigious stage and we’ll be watching the ceremony and supporting her later this month. She is a fantastic role model for our students and the wider sporting community.”
The BBC Sports Personality of the Year ceremony will take place on Thursday 18 December, with public voting set to open during the live broadcast.
Ellie’s recognition further highlights Hartpury’s reputation as a leading institution for rugby development, with a track record of producing elite athletes competing at national and global levels. In September, Hartpury was named Specialist University of the Year 2026 by The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide, in part due to this glittering dual pathway that enables students to combine their education and sporting ambitions.
