University lecturer appointed to International Board for Human-Animal Interaction

Hartpury University is proud to announce that Dr Clare Thomas-Pino, Senior Lecturer in Human-Animal Interaction, has been appointed to the board of the International Association of Human-Animal Interaction Organizations (IAHAIO), the global umbrella organisation for human-animal interaction (HAI), human-animal bond (HAB), and animal-assisted services (AAS).

Dr Thomas-Pino brings a wealth of experience to the role, having contributed to several IAHAIO task forces in recent years. Her work has included supporting initiatives focused on animal terminology, developing guidelines for researchers, and contributing to education standards for animal-assisted service providers. She has also played a key role in integrating IAHAIO guidelines, webinars, and resources into Hartpury’s postgraduate and undergraduate teaching.

At Hartpury University, Dr Thomas-Pino leads the MSc Animal Assisted Counselling and Psychotherapy programme and is a senior lecturer across degrees including the BSc Human Animal Interaction with Psychology. She ensures students benefit from the latest research, best practice, and global perspectives within this evolving field.

IAHAIO provides international leadership and collaboration opportunities across the human-animal interaction sector, supporting organisations worldwide with guidance, research, and shared learning.

Dr Clare Thomas-Pino said: “IAHAIO board membership complements my other roles, with opportunities to build connection and elevate awareness of the value of human-animal interaction and animal-assisted services.”

In addition to her new appointment, Dr Thomas-Pino also serves on the boards of the Society for Companion Animal Studies and the Horses and Humans Research Foundation, further strengthening Hartpury’s links with leading organisations in the field.

This appointment highlights Hartpury University’s ongoing commitment to advancing research, education, and professional practice in human-animal interaction. By embedding global expertise and industry collaboration into its teaching, Hartpury ensures students are equipped with the knowledge and skills to make a meaningful impact in this growing sector. This, in part, played a key role in the institution being named Specialist University of the Year in The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2026.
